Jan-Bas Bollen presents a set of pieces for bass guitar and laptop, with which he modifies sound and video in real-time. The music is partially notated, partially improvised and thus incorporates both his expertise as a composer as well as his experiences as a performing artist. Sources of inspiration for the video include war related footage, the human body and more abstract images. The digital distortion of the bass and the video through processing are deliberately emphasized to recall both the early days of video as well as pointing towards aliasing - the introduction of errors -that is still very much a part of low quality internet streaming today.
After his violin studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory in his native city Amsterdam, Dutch composer, instrumentalist, video artist and DJ Jan-Bas Bollen followed the renowned composition course at the Royal Conservatory The Hague. Among his most recent compositions are works for the Python Saxophone Quartet, Matangi String Quartet, Percussion Group The Hague, Steamboat Switzerland, Klang and several inter-diciplinary installations, such as "in Situ", a quadraphonic video project about Amsterdam. In his works he often applies innovative, interactive electronics. He collaborates frequently with dancers and choreographers, such as Ross Cooper (UK) and Dan Belton (NZ). He teaches composition at the ArtEZ Conservatory in Enschede, the Messiaen Academy and the CodArts Conservatory in Rotterdam. As a performer he is especially active on his digitally extended bass guitar, often including realtime video manipulation in (a.o.) LOOS - with Peter van Bergen, multimedia-performance duo SYNC - with composer Alison Isadora, and with Australian percussionist Steve Heather.
